Abstract
This study, entitled “Primary School Inspectors in the second third of the twentieth century”, analyses the lives of six female inspectors: Leonor Serrano de Pablo, Francisca Bohigas Gavilanes, Josefina Álvarez Díaz, Francisca Montilla Tirado, Julia Morrós Sardá and Aurora Medina de la Fuente. All of them were inspectors of primary teaching although they were active in this role at different times. This research offers a reconstruction of the lives of these women from their early years to retirement, highlighting the periods of their personal and professional lives of greatest significance, as well as the written output in which their ideas and concerns relating to the educational environment are reflected. Also taken into consideration is the conceptual framework of education in different historical periods. Two important features common to all the women are: their birth during the two decades spanning the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and their training within the framework of the ideas of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, brought together in the scientific and pedagogical institutions of the time. In this respect, it is significant that all the women were trained at the Escuela de Estudios Superiores del Magisterio and most of them received grants from the Junta de Ampliación de Estudios, a body which supported research projects carried out abroad, conducted analysis and study of education in other European countries, and established contacts with relevant figures in the contemporary scientific and pedagogical world. It could be said that their experiences were uniquely significant, taking into account that they took place in the first two decades of the twentieth century. It is notable that all the women qualified with outstandingly high marks, and their achievements in research were especially recognized. It is worth pointing out that in addition to their academic achievements, many of these women exercised positions in the political arena usually reserved for men. So Francisca Bohigas Gavilanes worked as a deputy and Leonor Serrano de Pablo studied law and applied successfully for admission to the school of Abogados de Barcelona...
