Abstract
The mid Campanian to Paleocene section in Sierra del Carche (Jumilla, Prebetic Domain, SE Spain) consists of 125 meters of carbonates and marls deposited in open platform environments. Facies analysis of these rocks characterize three major unconformities (mid Maastrichtian, latest Maastrichtian to earliest Paleocene, and mid Pa/eocene in age), and define the main changes in bathyrnetry occurring throughout the basin during this time. The establishment of unconformities and water-depth trends is important because of the privileged paleogeographic location occupied by the Sierra del Carche within the Betic Margin: an intermediate position betweeni the deeper facies of the Subbetic Domain (to the southeast) and the shallower sediments of other areas of the Prebetic Domain (to the northwest). Thus, the results of this work provide a good stratigraphic basis for intrabasinal correlation.
