Abstract
This paper analyses the discourse produced by civil guards on their military character in the Second Republic through the study of the articles published in their leading professional journal: the Revista Técnica de la Guardia Civil. It aims to examine how they defined that idea in order to keep their autonomy regarding the military power and to avoid the implementation of the Army's organizational models and action procedures. It argues that the strategy applied was to link semantically their military nature to the specific institutional features of the gendarmerie forces, which were rooted in their particular hybrid condition.
