Abstract
This PhD thesis, with the title The Countess of Berlepsch between Düsseldorf, Madrid and Vienna: Female Agency and Informal Power (1654-1723), sought to reconstruct the transnational trajectory of the baroness, and since 1695 countess, of Berlepsch in the courts of Düsseldorf, Madrid and Vienna to study the totality of her activities in these courtly spaces. Hence, it was necessary to examine the origins of the countess of Berlepsch and determine her agency before getting an appointment at the court of Düsseldorf. The biographical approach used to analyse the countess’s transnational cursus honorum permitted us to understand the processes of her incorporation into the patron-client networks of the elector palatine John William, emperor Leopold and queen Maria Anna. It also allows us to study her role at the Spanish court during the last decade of Charles II’s reign. This micro-historical study with a European and transnational approach enables us to interpret her activities in the courtly environment and examine the political and diplomatic events surrounding the Spanish question of succession from a new perspective. The analysis of the countess’s role in the camarilla alemana allows us to question her activities’ topical and traditional vision...
