Abstract
The aim of this thesis – titled Indoctrinating mutual hatred? British rule in Ireland– a transnational comparison of secondary school History textbooks – is to identify and analyse biased representations of the past in secondary school history textbooks, across nations with a contested common past. These biased narratives could represent the ‘other’as an ‘enemy’ – the side that was always to blame and ‘our side’ only ever responded to previous provocations and grievances. For this purpose, this thesis compares textbook narratives between neighbouring countries with a controversial history, from the point of view of historical accuracy. It is not the objective of this thesis to evaluate the didactic quality of textbooks or their use in classrooms...
