Abstract
Las enfermedades periodontales y periimplantarias son enfermedades inflamatorias crónicas cuyo principal factor etiológico son las bacterias organizadas en biofilms, lo que les confiere mayor resistencia frente a agentes externos en comparación con un estado planctónico. Estas enfermedades tienen una alta prevalencia, morbilidad e impacto. El tratamiento de la periodontitis y la periimplantitis consiste en la eliminación del biofilm subgingival/submucoso, a través de terapias no quirúrgicas y quirúrgicas, con la ayuda o no de tratamientos adyuvantes locales o sistémicos. Sin embargo, en algunas ocasiones no es predecible, lo que hace fundamental el desarrollo de nuevos materiales y procedimientos con el objeto de mejorar el pronóstico y reproducibilidad del tratamiento. Ante ello, surgen un nuevo tipo de materiales nanoestructurados, como las nanopartículas poliméricas activas (NPs) y las membranas nanoestructuradas de polimetilmetacrilato (PMMA-NMs). Periodontal and peri-implant diseases are chronic inflammatory diseases. Their main etiological factor is bacteria organized in biofilms, endowing them with greater resistance to external agents compared with their planktonic state. These diseases have a high prevalence, morbidity and impact. The treatment of periodontitis and periimplantitis involves elimination of the subgingival/submucosal biofilm through non-surgical and surgical therapies, with or without local or systemic adjuvant treatments. However, the outcome is not always predictable, and new materials and procedures are needed to improve the prognosis and reproductibility of the treatment. Novel types of nano structured materials have emerged to meet this need, including active polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) and polymethylmethacrylate nanostructured membranes (PMMA-NMS). Their physicochemical properties make them promising materilas for controlled drug release and periodontal and bone regeneration....
