Abstract
ABSTRACT: These pages offer some reflections on the visual coincidences of transvestism in the Assemblywomen of Aristophanes, in the Skira and in the so-called anacreontic vases. In these vases, men playing women dressed as men could be recognised. Probably the key to understanding these similarities is found in the mimesis on the part of the men of the ritual activity of the women, especially of their secret rites of reversal. This mimesis takes place in the comastic and symposiast realm of archaic and classical Athens and it is, among other factors, at the origin of comedy.
