Abstract
This doctoral thesis is born from my personal and professional research and tries to understand the contradictions that Social Work evidenced during my own practice, both as a professional and as a teacher. To a larger extend, it emerges from listening to the questions, concerns, desires and emotions regarding the profession and the application of their knowledge in teaching and learning of Social Work students and professionals, as well as professionals from other disciplines. The literature reviewed reveals two positions regarding research in Social Work training. One is more instrumental as it seeks to evaluate Social Work training in terms of achievement, competencies, and development of skills for employment. The other is morer eflective as it aims to understand the recurring and reproduced limitations in training overtime, such as the lack of knowledge integration, theory-practice disarticulation, absence of a research tradition, and less interest in the recovery of local disciplinaries histories...
