Abstract
The city of Madrid is constituted by a multiplicity of narratives and discourses that have shaped a complex space that is ultimately defined by the sometimes fraught coexistence of experiences. Observing these cities reveals a significant diversity of spatialities—that is, areas that incorporate numerous green spaces, urban gardens, community centers, and neighborhood associations; others dominated by wide avenues, gated communities, private parks, and urban-business developments; and yet others where industrial activities continue to define the primary landscape. In all cases, these spaces demonstrate how the social fabric operates in varied ways, articulating its demands through multiple channels, generating moments of politicization as well as episodes of consensus with municipal authorities, which ultimately results in the differentiated shaping of urban spaces. Accordingly, the principal aim of the present research is to understand how these differentiated spatialities emerge and structure cities...
