Abstract
The aim of this paper is to study the exile of the writers Stefan Zweig and Max Aub through their works "Die Welt von Gestern" and "La gallina ciega". Thus, this is a comparative study with two perspectives: the historical and the literary. The historical perspective allows us to gain an in-depth knowledge of the authors' life experience in exile through the analysis of their biographies; and the literary perspective analyses the way in which the authors expressed this particular experience in two of their best-known works. Of course, both the exile of the German-speaking countries and the Spanish exile in general, as well as the particular experiences of the writers, present differences and also similarities that are studied through different categories, which have been extracted from Michael Ugarte's (1989) theory on the splitting of the self caused by exile.
