Abstract
The audiovisual saga of Inspector Montalbano (Il commissario Montalbano, 1999-2020, RAI) is an example of a success story worthy of analysis. This TV drama is the result of a successful literary adaptation in the hands of a public television channel. It was created before the rise of digital platforms. This paper analyzes the keys for its success and focuses on dismantling the stereotype of Italian women typical of Italian Neorealism. It shows a womanhood away from the traditional archetypal and domestic roles concentrated in a single multifaceted female character. This paper analyzes the main female roles focusing on the characters of Livia Burlando, Ingrid Sjöström, and Adelina Cirrinciò. They all are complementary to the inspector Salvo Montalbano. The study concludes the vital importance of these female figures in the construction of the main character.
