Migrating Fabulous Half-Birds? Sirens and Sirin

Abstract

En este trabajo examinamos las relaciones entre las sirenas de la mitología clásica y el ave Sirin del folklore ruso. A pesar de las similitudes entre los nombres y la fisonomía de esos seres imaginarios, existen también algunas llamativas diferencias, que pueden deberse al influjo de otras creencias populares eslavas. Sugerimos que criaturas parecidas a las sirenas podían existir ya en el folklore eslavo antes de que los eslavos tuvieran noticia de las sirenas de la mitología clásica.In this paper we deal with the relationship between the sirens of classical mythology and the Sirin bird of Russian folklore. Despite all similarities between the names and appearance of those fabulous beings, there are some striking differences between them, which can be due to the influence of other Slavic folk beliefs. We suggest that siren-like creatures could already exist in Slavic folklore before the Slavs' getting acquainted with the sirens of classical mythology.В этой статьи мы изучаем отношения между сиренами в античной мифологии и птица Сирин в русском фольклоре. Несмотря на все сходности в названиях и внешности тех существ, есть и интересные разницы между ними. Причиной таких разниц может быть влияние иных славянских народных верований. Мы предполагаем, что персонажи, подобные на сирены, уже могли существовать в славянском фольклоре до того, пока славяне не познакомились с сиренами античной мифологии.
