Abstract
ABSTRACT: In Russian literature, nature has been an important element in the poetic universe of many poets and writers. However, in the society of the early 20th century, a change in the interpretation of nature took place. The prohibition of religion during the Revolution shifted spirituality from its originally sacred spaces. The aim of this paper is to analyze the image of nature, focusing on the portrayal of trees in contexts with religious and spiritual connotations in the poetry of Boris Pasternak and Marina Tsvetaeva. For the analysis, qualitative methodology of a historical-critical nature is applied, along with comparative hermeneutic methodology in the realm of humanistic literature. The paper concludes that in Pasternak’s poetry, as well as in Tsvetaeva’s, the presence of trees is constant. Trees are linked to the everyday, the divine, and the spiritual, while simultaneously carrying images of a religious nature.
