Abstract
Following the publication of the «The Vampyre» by John William Polidori in The New Monthly Magazine, and as a result of its attribution to Lord Byron, numerous theatrical adaptations were performed. First in Paris, then London and Madrid, the audience saw the vampire incarnated for the first time. This article tries to highlight the role of theater in the pioneering formation of the nineteenth-century vampire’s image and describes how it arrived at the Teatro de la Cruz in 1821, where the actor Juan Carretero became the first vampire seen in Madrid.
