Abstract
During the dynastic union, the Portuguese cristãos-novos and their supporters constantly appealed to the Catholic monarchs and the Supreme Pontiffs to reform the Portuguese Inquisition. Beyond the practical aspects, the cristãos-novos sought to introduce the Spanish Inquisition´s procedures in Portugal. The controversy centred largely on the validity of individual witnesses to prove the crime of heresy. For its part, the Portuguese Holy Office struggled throughout the sixty years to maintain its autonomy and jurisdiction in the face of interference from the Crown or the Holy See.
