Abstract
This thesis examines the rewriting of myths and folk tales in contemporary young adult literature in English and Spanish, drawing on the theories of Joseph Campbell and Vladimir Propp. Building on these approaches, it introduces the Hero’s Monotravels, a narrative model that synthesizes mythological and folkloric structures to analyze a range of modern adaptations. The model rests on two core principles: action and victory. A hero is not defined by innate abilities but by taking action, overcoming challenges, and achieving a goal. By analyzing authors such as Rick Riordan, Marissa Meyer, Iria G. Parente, Selene M. Pascual, and Laura Gallego, this study shows how these narratives modernize myths while preserving their cultural significance. The study concludes that the Hero’s Monotravels framework enables the comparison and systematization of the evolution of the heroic narrative, providing a methodological tool applicable not only to young adult literature but also to film, video games, and other forms of storytelling.
