Abstract
This paper reflects on the essayistic form and political content of Resnais & Marker’s film Les Statues meurent aussi (1953), where they studied the distortions of identity produced both on African sculptures and their pro- ducers. It also puts its theme in context by studying the multi-layered response to African sculpture in Paris in the early years of the 20th century, and it ends with a proposal to understand the film as a working model of film-essay on art, perfectly suitable for being used in future audio-visual History of Art and Visual Culture essays.
