Abstract
The dissertation (Long-term individual effects of private schooling: an exploration with Spanish data) has one main objective, to answer a question such as: why have so many Spanish families, over time, chosen private schools for their children? The tentative answer is that it has made sense to choose it because those who have studied in private or, especially, private but subsidized schools tend to obtain better individual results in the long term, in their levels of education, occupation and income, but also in their development of altruistic dispositions. This is not due to a higher social background. As a secondary objective, the dissertation has elaborated on an issue that is more common in education studies: how do those who choose private schooling differ from those who does not? We know that this is a public with a higher socioeconomic level, but not all of them belong to the wealthier classes. The thesis reviews the historical evolution of the social composition of schools in Spain and ascertains that there has been a notable mix of classes in the private sector (not necessarily in the same schools). In other words, private education has been sufficiently open to less favored families for them to use it for their strategies of upward social mobility...
