Aznavour ou le drame nostalgique populaire

Abstract

Charles Aznavour, le chanteur français vivant le plus connu dans le monde à ce jour, situé dans l’entre-deux de la variété et de la chanson « de qualité», a cultivé un style sentimental réaliste imprégné de nostalgie. L’article a pour objectif d’analyser la présence du sentiment nostalgique dans son œuvre comme motif thématique et esthétique ayant contribué à construire sa popularité. Dans ce but, nous analyserons premièrement ses grands succès nostalgiques, puis nous étudierons comment la nostalgie constitue un des piliers du style aznavourien, que nous définirons comme essentiellement dramatique. Ainsi, par le biais d’un mimétisme réaliste dépourvu de visée sociale, Aznavour trouve dans la nostalgie un motif populaire auquel son public modèle peut facilement s’identifier. Finalement, nous explorerons les enjeux de la chanson nostalgique française comme signe mémoratif sur le plan esthétique et culturel.Charles Aznavour, the best-known living French singer to date, located in-between variété and chanson, has cultivated a sentimental style infused with nostalgia. This article endeavours to analyse the presence of nostalgic feelings in his work as a thematic and aesthetic motif which has played an essential role in building up his popularity. For that purpose, I will analyse his great nostalgic successes, showing how nostalgia becomes one of the essential features in his style, one which will be defined as essentially dramatic. Indeed, throughout mimetic realism deprived of social commitment, Aznavour finds in nostalgia a popular motif, one which his public can easily identify with. Finally, I will explore how nostalgic chanson has become a memorial sign both aesthetically and culturally.
